Pillows. What you need to know…

The most important thing to realise when it comes to choosing pillows is that one size does not fit all.

How you sleep, the type of mattress you sleep on, whether you like a firmer or softer pillow, your physical size or whether you have any special health requirements all play an important role in what pillow you choose.

The golden rule is to go into a store and, just as you would for a new mattress, “test-drive” your options. There are more than 20 different shapes that Bedpost can offer and Bedpost’s assistants can help you narrow down the choices so you find the right fit.

Before you do head into the store, here are a few things to consider about what will work for you and let you give Bedpost’s assistants the right information to tailor your perfect pillow.

How you sleep

People who sleep on their back often prefer a medium support pillow which supports the natural position of the neck and upper spine.

People who sleep on their side often prefer a firmer pillow to keep the neck, shoulders and head in a straight alignment.

People who sleep on their front often prefer a soft pillow to cushion the neck and head in a comfortable position, allowing the head to turn in either direction.

People who sleep in a variety of positions often choose a medium support pillow.

Types of fill

Down is a natural, luxurious option which uses the fluffiest feathers from ducks or geese. It has great insulating properties, is wonderfully soft and offers superb support for your neck and spine.

Natural fibres can offer the same support as down for those who suffer from allergies.

Synthetic fill is great for allergy sufferers who can’t use down-filled pillows and are a more economical option.

Memory foam is often the choice of those who prefer a firmer pillow and who may suffer from back or neck issues. It is a temperature-sensitive material which responds to your body and moulds to the natural curve of your neck and spine.

Covers

Some pillow covers may be treated with anti-bacterial, anti-microbial or stain-resistant treatments making them great for allergy sufferers.

It’s also important to consider the thread count of your cover, especially if you have down or feather fills. The general rule is that the higher the thread count, the more hard-wearing the cover and the less chance for down to escape or impurities to get in.
